An ancient castle in the city park, which is actually a little over 100 years old. What is Vajdahunyad really?

The famous Parade Avenue of Budapest ends with Heroes Square. Across the road from it begins a city park with a lake. A wonderful panorama of the fairy-tale castle of Vajdahunyad opens from a small bridge (Vajdahunyad vára).

The history of Vajdahunyad castle

In 1896, a popular festival in Budapest, Varoshliget, was held in honor of the millennium of the Hungarians in their homeland. On this occasion, the architect Ignaz Alpara created the “Historical Pavilion”. Made of wood, a temporary installation showed the evolution of Hungary’s architectural styles through the centuries.

The festival is over. Wooden structure dismantled. But the inhabitants of Budapest really liked the idea of building a castle made of stone in the same place. A general decision approved the construction project. Work was done from 1904 to 1908 year. Upon completion, one of the most unusual architectural ensembles appeared in front of the Budapest in all its glory.

The stone castle is divided into 4 parts according to its architectural style: Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque. Within each section there is a further division. Total 21 facilities. Each is a replica of a significant structure for Hungary.

Gothick style

The rise of Gothic architecture dates back to the 13-15 century. This style has towers, narrow windows and stained glass windows. Of all the important Gothic-style buildings for the Hungarian people, Ignaz Alpara chose to use the design of the Romanian castle Corvin, aka Vajdahunyad (Castelul huniazilor or The Corvin Castle). It was in his honor that it was decided to name the whole complex.

Translated from the Romanian "Corvin" means "crow". The castle was the patrimonial nest of Janus (Janos) of Hunyada, the father of Matthew Corvinus (aka Matthias of Hunyad), called the first. Under Matthias I, Hungary reached the peak of power. In honor of him in Bodo is the snow-white church of St.. Matthias

Vajdahunyad Castle

Some elements were inspired by the Peter and Paul Cathedral in the city of Pec (Cathedral of Pécs).

Renaissance

The heyday of the Renaissance fell on the 15-16 century, immediately after the Gothic. Roman architecture again entered the fashion: columns, arches, domes. The main motto was symmetry in everything. Alpar drew inspiration from the Slovak city of Levoča (Lőcse).

Baroque

Baroque style (with it. barocco translated bizarre, excessive) replaced the Renaissance and dominated 16, 17 and partially 18 centuries. Baroque - synonymous with pomp, wealth. He has a great attention to detail, pretentiousness.

The architect was inspired by the Hungarian Royal Palace of Godollo (Gödöllői Királyi Kastély), Karlovy Vorota Alba Yulia (Charles Gate of Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár)) and palaces of Austria.
